The role of Armenian newspapers in Armenian-American community
California and Los Angeles in particular has one of the biggest Armenian communities in the world. It is natural that people living far from their home country and customs and traditions seek to preserve them even more. There are different ways of keeping the nations’ spirit alive even when living far from your home country. Armenians are considered to be one of the strongest nations in the world, which has been proved by their ability to keep their traditions, customs and language throughout years.
To keep our essence of identity, authenticity, and uniqueness alive, we must preserve our language, our traditions and our religion alive and strong. This must not be just acknowledged but also spread around the community and around the world, of course. Mass media, be it printed or online, is nowadays the best , easiest and fastest way to spread information.
Armenian newspapers are a very important part of the life of Armenian community in California. There are around 15 Armenian newspapers being published in California( Armenia newspapers, Asbarez Daily, The Armenian Observer, USA Armenian Life, Zhamanak Daily, etc). To know this must make us Armenians happy because that means our language is alive, our community is cohesive and supportive of one another. One can find any information regarding Armenians in Armenian newspapers, from local news to news from Armenia, information about Armenian events in California, Armenian people, Armenian history and of course advertisements.
The fact that there are still young Armenian people who study journalism and then become a member of any Armenian newspaper staff and write in Armenian gives us all hope that our language, our traditions and our identity will always be as strong as it is now.
